Sustainable Knife Packagings

Client: Bergkvist, Germany

For the German outdoor brand Bergkvist, I designed a sustainable packaging series. Common knife boxes use an EVA foam inlay, which is hard to recycle and shouldn't land in paper recycling bins. However, this box can entirely be disposed of in a paper recycling bin or kept as a collectors item.

The series consists of luxury boxes for 10 different knives. All boxes have the same size and consistent fonts. For each knife, a characteristic pattern is shown on the box and sleeve that matches the knife it contains. 4 of the patterns are displayed here.

The packaging series was awarded the Iron A’ Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design Category.

The cardboard used for the sleeve and booklet is made of 100% recycled cardboard. The structural cardboard of the box is recycled material as well. Bagasse, a by-product of the cane sugar industry is used for the inlay that holds the knife, pouch, and whetstone. It is a type of tree-free paper that can be recycled together with other paper products.

The award-winning K29 knives were also designed by me for Bergkvist.

I also designed another sustainable packaging for the Bergkvist brand with a different type of inlay.
